Home Education & Training Short Courses

Declining soil fertility, Environmental degradation and poor farming methods coupled with climate change are real challenges that have seen poverty levels increase rapidly over recent years. Baraka as a training institution, designs short courses that address these challenges in an effort to alleviate poverty and suffering in the rural community.

The practices and skills advocated for are those that are culturally appropriate and take cognizance of the environment. The short courses are respond to the challenges that are facing rural communities through building individual as well as group capacities to critically analyze and respond to these ,in an effort to finding home grown solutions.

The aim of the short course is that participants acquire knowledge and skills necessary for rural development and sustainable livelihoods.

Resources/facilities

The college training resources include the shamba ( farm) ,bee keeping development unit and the skills unit. Teaching aids includes audio visuals like the Projectors, educational videos and computers.

The college library is well stocked with relevant Materials including books, farming magazines, and easy to read pamphlets and brochures. The college boasts of 24 hr internet services available via V-sat.

Course participants are provided with stationary and typed easy to read notes at end of the training. The 34 seater college bus comes in handy to provide transport to the short course participants for educational exposure visits.

Short courses are designed to address specific interest areas in agriculture and rural development. They are clustered as crops and livestock production, agri-business, and rural development courses.

SHORT COURSES:

The cost of courses range from Kshs 9,500 to Kshs 13,000. Fees are inclusive of the tuition, food and accommodation. Courses run from Sunday evening (Supper included) to Saturday morning (after breakfast). Participants are strongly adviced to bring their own towel and gumboots (Wellington boots). Recent courses have featured students from all over Africa as well as the UK. Transport can be arranged for foreign students from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi - please refer to the college for transport charges. The courses are conducted in both English and Kiswahili or translated into local languages depending on the group and at the end of the course participants are awarded certificates. Beekeeping short courses focus on sustainable beekeeping using traditional and top bar hives, however, frame hives are also included. Training sessions are designed to be as practical as possible.

  2. 2.Arrangements can be make to offer course to organized groups (full board or on-site) which fall outside the above schedules.
