The SHDI/Baraka partnership
Since
1997 Self Help Development International (SHDI) have been working
in Kenya indirectly through support provided to Baraka Agricultural
College. With Baraka as it’s local partner and using a people
centred bottom-up approach, successful projects have been implemented
in Lare and Kamara divisions of Nakuru District. Currently Baraka
Agricultural College run an area-based programme in two Divisions:
Kamara in Nakuru District and Tenges in Baringo District.
The aim of this area based programme is to promote the integrated
development of the two divisions through the promotion of sustainable
agriculture and rural development. The methodology used is bottom–up
based on a participatory action research (PAR) approach. The programme
also feeds into other college programmes and provides a very useful
training ground for students and staff.
The programme is implemented in partnership with the Ministries
of Agriculture and Livestock and other development agencies working
in the divisions. Demand driven service delivery is encouraged and
emphasized in all stages. The main components of the programme include:
soil fertility, crop and livestock production, natural resource
management, health, and local capacity building that includes: savings
and credit, group development, youth, women empowerment, marketing
promotion and institutional capacity building.

SHDI’s work in other parts of Africa

a large number of long term projects in Ethiopia, Eriteria, Malawi
and Uganda. The main emphasis has been on assisting rural communities
in Africa achieve self-sufficiency in food production and ensuring
sustainability. Self Help and supporters have made a major contribution
to the lives of over 1.5 million people in rural communities across
Africa. This has largely been due to its commitment to building
partnership with local communities as a core principle of development.
